“Our mission is to provide academic scholarships to high school seniors that seeking higher education, while providing awareness and education in our community about Diabetes, Kidney Disease as well as the importance of organ donation, while also servicing the needs of our community.”
The Obadiah Jo’el McCarthy Memorial Scholarship is a newly founded 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that seeks to provide educational scholarships to first year students entering an accredited program as well as to increase organ donation and diabetes awareness. The organization was inspired by Obadiah Jo’el McCarthy who was born with a rare kidney disease called “Alport Syndrome”. He was diagnosed with this illness at the age of 9 years old, along with Type 1 Diabetes. Obadiah suffered renal failure at the age of 16 and received a dual transplant of a kidney and pancreas at the age of 17. Obadiah’s organs rejected at the age of 20 as a result, his health began to decline. Obadiah passed away at the age of 22 on May 12, 2022, due to complications of kidney failure and Type 1 diabetes.
Obadiah graduated from Steele High School in Cibolo, TX. He attended Northeast Lakeview College in San Antonio, TX. He loved serving God while working in his church, St. John Baptist Church in Leon Valley, TX. Obadiah enjoyed playing basketball whenever his health allowed him to. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Obadiah loved bowties and owned a large collection of them. Obadiah’s highest aspirations were to one day design his own athletic sneaker as well as meet Lebron James in person. Obadiah touched many people with his warm smile and gentle words. The OJM Memorial Scholarship was created in his honor . We would love for the world to help keep his memory alive and bring awareness to Chronic Kidney Disease and Type 1 Diabetes, while also providing help to those in need of educational financial support.
Our organization seeks to identify high school graduates who exemplify the same strength and determination traits that we all saw in Obadiah. These traits include: a strong sense of friendship and commitment to succeeding despite all adversities he faced.
